The Spiti Summer Expedition is one of the most breathtaking and transformative journeys you can take in the Indian Himalayas. Located in Himachal Pradesh, Spiti Valley—meaning "The Middle Land"—is a cold desert mountain valley nestled between Tibet and India. During summer, Spiti sheds its winter isolation and welcomes adventurers with open roads, crystal-clear skies, and timeless monasteries perched on cliffs. This high-altitude expedition is a paradise for road-trippers, photographers, culture seekers, and offbeat travel lovers.
Summer is the best season to explore Spiti’s remote villages, high passes, ancient gompas, and dramatic landscapes. With temperatures ranging from 5°C to 20°C, the valley becomes accessible and comfortable for travel. The snow melts, opening up iconic routes such as the Shimla–Kinnaur–Spiti–Manali circuit. Glacial rivers flow freely, monasteries host festivals, and the golden sun casts surreal shadows over mountains. Unlike Ladakh, which can get crowded, Spiti in summer still retains a sense of untouched tranquility.
There are two routes to Spiti:
Via Shimla–Kinnaur (recommended for entry): This route is open earlier in the season and helps gradual acclimatization.
Via Manali–Rohtang–Kunzum La: Opens only after mid-June and offers stunning high-altitude crossings.
By Air: Nearest airport is Bhuntar (Kullu), but better connectivity is from Chandigarh or Delhi.
By Road: Private cabs or self-driven SUVs are ideal. Public buses also run to Reckong Peo and Kaza.
By Train: Nearest railway head is Shimla or Chandigarh.
The journey begins in Shimla, winding into Kinnaur’s lush landscapes. Pass through Sangla Valley, Chitkul (last Indian village), and Kalpa, where views of Kinnaur Kailash dominate the horizon.
Cross into the upper reaches at Nako, a serene lake village at 12,000 ft. Nearby lies Gue, home to India’s only naturally preserved 500-year-old mummy of a Buddhist monk.
Visit Tabo Monastery, a 1000-year-old UNESCO heritage site, known as the "Ajanta of the Himalayas." Dhankar Monastery, precariously clinging to a cliff, offers surreal views of the confluence of Spiti and Pin rivers.
Kaza is the main town and your base to explore Key Monastery, Langza (fossil village), Hikkim (world’s highest post office), Komic (world’s highest village connected by motorable road), and Kibber, a gateway to snow leopard sightings in winter.
In summer, the snow clears around Kunzum Pass (15,000 ft) allowing access to the crescent-shaped Chandratal Lake, one of the most pristine high-altitude lakes in India. The reflection of the surrounding peaks on its clear waters is a photographer’s dream.
May to mid-July: Ideal for entering via Shimla and exiting via Manali.
Mid-June to September: Entire circuit is open including Chandratal. Avoid monsoon months (late July–August) if entering via Kinnaur due to landslide risks.
Warm clothes even in summer (temperatures drop at night)
Sturdy shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm
Basic medication, first aid, and altitude sickness prevention
Reusable water bottle and snacks
Power bank and offline maps (signal is sparse)
Spiti offers a range of homestays, guesthouses, and campsites. Staying with locals offers authentic cultural immersion, including traditional Spitian meals like thukpa, momos, barley soup, and butter tea.
Permit: No permits required for Indian citizens, but carry ID. Foreign nationals need permits for some areas.
AMS: Acclimatize properly, especially when crossing Kunzum or staying at high-altitude villages.
Road Conditions: Roads can be rough and narrow. A high-ground clearance vehicle is recommended.
Respect Local Culture: Spiti is deeply spiritual. Be mindful near monasteries and village customs.
The Spiti Summer Expedition is not just a road trip—it’s a soul-stirring journey through a remote Himalayan world. From stark deserts to lush valleys, ancient monasteries to alien landscapes, every turn on the Spiti circuit feels like stepping into a postcard. Whether you're chasing mountain serenity, Buddhist heritage, or raw adventure, Spiti in summer is where the Himalayas offer their most poetic embrace.
