The Beas Kund Trek is one of the most popular and beginner-friendly treks in the Indian Himalayas, located in Himachal Pradesh. Just a short drive from Manali, this short yet rewarding trek takes you to the serene Beas Kund, a glacial lake nestled amidst the towering peaks of the Dhauladhar Range. It is believed to be the very spot where Rishi Vyas, the author of the Mahabharata, meditated and bathed. At an altitude of around 12,772 feet (3,890 meters), the lake is the origin of the Beas River, making the trek both spiritually and geographically significant.
This trek offers the rare combination of breathtaking alpine scenery, proximity to Manali, and a short 3-day itinerary, making it perfect for long weekends or first-time trekkers. With snow-capped mountains like Hanuman Tibba, Friendship Peak, and Shitidhar towering above, trekkers are treated to dramatic views right from the first day. The lush meadows of Bakarthach and Dhundi are also grazing grounds for local shepherds, adding a rustic cultural charm to the journey.
The total distance of the Beas Kund Trek is approximately 16–18 km, typically covered over 3 to 4 days. It is classified as an easy to moderate trek, ideal for beginners, families, and photographers. The route does not require technical climbing skills, but basic fitness is essential for dealing with altitude and trail conditions.
The best months to do the Beas Kund Trek are mid-May to October. May–June: Ideal for snow lovers. The higher reaches remain snow-covered, offering stunning contrasts with the green valleys below. July–August: Monsoon season makes the trail lush and colorful, but rain can cause slippery paths and visibility issues. September–October: Post-monsoon period brings crisp skies, dry trails, and crystal-clear views of the surrounding peaks.
Day 1 – Drive from Manali to Solang Valley and Trek to Dhundi (9,000 ft) Start your journey from Manali with a short drive to Solang Valley, known for skiing and paragliding. Begin your trek to Dhundi, a 7 km stretch that winds through forests of oak, fir, and walnut. Camp here under a sky filled with stars.
Day 2 – Dhundi to Bakarthach (10,800 ft) Trek through meadows used by local shepherds and Gujjars. The terrain starts to open up, revealing views of Mount Hanuman Tibba and glaciers in the distance. Camp at Bakarthach, a wide alpine field perfect for rest and acclimatization.
Day 3 – Bakarthach to Beas Kund and Back Start early to reach the sacred Beas Kund, a beautiful glacial lake surrounded by rugged peaks and snowfields. The setting is quiet and majestic, and you’ll see the Beas River emerging from the lake. After spending time by the kund, retrace your steps to Bakarthach or descend further based on your itinerary.

For the Beas Kund Trek, carry layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, thermal wear, a good-quality backpack, hiking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, water bottles, a personal medical kit, and energy snacks. A trekking pole helps with balance during steep ascents and descents.
During the trek, camping is the standard accommodation, with most trekkers opting for guided tours where tents, sleeping bags, and meals are provided. Meals typically include vegetarian Indian food, with a focus on carbs for energy. Hot tea, soups, and snacks are often served at campsites.
Beas Kund is a relatively safe trek, but it’s important to be prepared for altitude sickness, sudden weather changes, and slippery terrain. Always carry a basic first-aid kit, stay hydrated, and trek with a guide or reliable trekking group. Avoid trekking during heavy rains or snowfall for safety.
