Panch Kedar refers to the five sacred temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, India. These temples are Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madmaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar. According to Hindu mythology, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva’s forgiveness for their sins after the Kurukshetra war. Shiva eluded them in the form of a bull and later reappeared in five different parts across the Himalayas. These five sites together form the Panch Kedar and are among the most revered pilgrimage destinations for Shaivites.
Religious Significance
Each of the five temples represents a different part of Lord Shiva’s body. Kedarnath represents the hump, Tungnath the arms, Rudranath the face, Madmaheshwar the navel, and Kalpeshwar the hair. Pilgrims believe that visiting all five temples in one journey helps attain salvation and wash away past sins. The Panch Kedar Yatra is both spiritually enriching and physically challenging, attracting both devotees and trekking enthusiasts.
How to Reach Panch Kedar
Reaching Panch Kedar requires good planning and involves multiple treks between remote locations in the Himalayas. By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun. From there, one must travel by road to various base points for each temple. By Train: The nearest railway stations are Haridwar and Rishikesh. From there, taxis and buses connect to towns like Guptkashi, Ukhimath, and Helang. By Road: Roads are available till the base villages like Gaurikund (Kedarnath), Chopta (Tungnath), Sagar (Rudranath), Ransi (Madmaheshwar), and Helang (Kalpeshwar). From these points, trekking routes lead to the temples. Trek: Each temple involves a separate trek – Kedarnath (16 km), Tungnath (3.5 km), Rudranath (20 km), Madmaheshwar (16 km), Kalpeshwar (3 km). The terrain varies in difficulty and elevation.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Panch Kedar is from May to October. Most temples open around Akshaya Tritiya and close after Diwali due to heavy snowfall. June and September are considered the best months due to favorable weather. Monsoon months (July-August) are risky because of landslides and cloudbursts.

Basic guesthouses, tents, government lodges, and dharamshalas are available near each temple. Facilities are limited in remote areas, especially at Rudranath and Madmaheshwar.
