The Rudranath Trek is a hidden gem in Uttarakhand’s Panch Kedar circuit — a serene and powerful journey through dense forests, high-altitude meadows, and sacred Himalayan paths. Located at an altitude of around 11,800 feet, Rudranath Temple is unique among the five Kedar shrines, as Lord Shiva is worshipped here in his face (mukha) form.
This trek offers not just a physical challenge, but a deep spiritual experience that few places in the world can match.
According to ancient Mahabharata legends, Rudranath is where the Pandavas sought forgiveness from Lord Shiva after the Kurukshetra war. The deity here is considered extremely compassionate, and the energy of the place is said to cleanse one’s karma.
With its secluded setting, Rudranath Temple feels untouched and timeless, surrounded by myth and mist.
The trail to Rudranath winds through ancient forests, blooming rhododendrons, and vast alpine meadows known as bugyals. You’ll pass through quiet villages, sacred rivers, and natural springs — all while being enveloped in Himalayan silence.
The trek starts from Sagar village or Liti, depending on the chosen route, and ranges between 18 to 24 km, depending on the trail. It’s moderately challenging, making it perfect for anyone with basic fitness and a thirst for natural beauty.
From Rudranath, get sweeping views of iconic Himalayan peaks like:
Nanda Devi
Trishul
Nanda Ghunti
Hathi Parvat
The sunrise and sunset views from the meadows near Rudranath are unforgettable and deeply spiritual — perfect for meditation and reflection.
If you’re looking for a pilgrimage off the tourist track, the Rudranath Trek offers quiet trails, raw nature, and deep spiritual energy. It’s ideal for solo travelers, devotees, and nature lovers seeking peace, meaning, and reconnection.

Rudranath is one of the five temples in the sacred Panch Kedar circuit, located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. At an altitude of 3,600 meters (11,800 feet), Rudranath Temple is the only place where Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of his face (mukha). Surrounded by dense forests and alpine meadows, the Rudranath trek offers both spiritual fulfillment and scenic Himalayan beauty.
According to legend, after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought forgiveness from Lord Shiva, who appeared in different forms at five locations—Rudranath being one of them. Here, Shiva’s face is believed to have appeared. Devotees believe that a darshan at Rudranath cleanses them of past sins and grants inner peace. The temple is considered deeply mystical and is often visited as part of the full Panch Kedar Yatra.
The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. From there, one must drive to the base village of Sagar or Mandal via Gopeshwar.
The closest railway stations are Haridwar and Rishikesh. Buses or taxis can be taken from there to Gopeshwar.
Gopeshwar is well connected by road to major towns in Uttarakhand. From there, Sagar village (5 km) or Mandal (13 km) serve as base points.
The trek from Sagar to Rudranath is about 20 km through forests, bugyals (meadows), and ridges. Alternate routes are available from Mandal and Anusuya Devi Temple. The trail is steep and requires good physical fitness.
The temple opens in May and closes in October before heavy snowfall begins. The best months to visit are May-June and September-October. During monsoon (July-August), the trail becomes slippery and prone to landslides, making travel risky.

Food options are limited to basic vegetarian meals like dal, rice, and roti. Non-vegetarian food and alcohol are not allowed due to the religious sanctity of the place.
