The Black Peak Expedition, also known as the Kalanag Peak Expedition, is one of the most challenging and rewarding climbing adventures in the Indian Himalayas. Towering at an elevation of 6,387 meters (20,955 feet), Black Peak is the highest peak in the Bandarpunch massif, located in the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park of Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand. The peak gets its name "Kalanag" (meaning "Black Cobra") due to its unique, dark appearance that resembles the hood of a cobra.
The expedition is a serious mountaineering endeavor that involves glacier travel, steep snow and ice climbing, and technical challenges, making it ideal for climbers with prior high-altitude trekking or mountaineering experience.
Highest Peak in the Bandarpunch Range: Standing at nearly 21,000 feet, it offers a commanding view of several Himalayan peaks and is considered a prestigious climb in Indian mountaineering. Technical and Challenging Climb: This is not just a trek—it’s a real expedition requiring use of mountaineering gear like crampons, ice axe, ropes, and technical know-how. Glorious Summit Views: From the summit, one can witness panoramic views of Swargarohini, Bandarpunch, Rupin Range, and Yamunotri Valley. Diverse Landscapes: The route passes through dense forests, alpine meadows, glacial moraines, and high-altitude snowy terrain. Offbeat and Remote: The trek is relatively less crowded compared to other Himalayan expeditions, giving you solitude and untouched beauty.
The ideal time for the Black Peak Expedition is late May to early June and September to early October. During these months, the weather is stable, skies are clear, and snow conditions are most suitable for climbing. Monsoons (July-August) bring heavy rainfall and should be avoided due to landslides and unstable terrain.
