Kedarnath and Tungnath are two of the most revered pilgrimage sites in India dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the majestic Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. These temples form part of the Panch Kedar and are deeply rooted in Hindu mythology and spirituality. Kedarnath, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, is situated at an altitude of 3,583 meters, while Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world, sits at 3,680 meters. Together, they offer a spiritually enriching experience for devotees and adventure seekers, blending devotion with Himalayan beauty and serenity.
Kedarnath holds immense religious value as the place where Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a hump-shaped Jyotirlinga to bless the Pandavas after the Kurukshetra war. It is said to have been built by the Pandavas and later revived by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. Tungnath is believed to be the spot where the arms of Lord Shiva appeared. According to mythology, after Shiva disguised himself as a bull and disappeared into the ground, different parts of his body emerged at different places, forming the five temples of Panch Kedar. Kedarnath and Tungnath are two of the most important temples in this spiritual trail, offering profound peace and divine blessings.
To reach Kedarnath, travelers must first reach Gaurikund, the last motorable point. From there, a 16 km trek takes you to the Kedarnath Temple. Helicopter services are also available from Phata, Sersi, and Guptkashi. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, and the closest railway stations are in Rishikesh and Haridwar. Tungnath can be reached by trekking 3.5 km from Chopta, also known as the 'Mini Switzerland of India.' Chopta is accessible by road from Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Ukhimath. The Tungnath trek is suitable even for beginners and offers stunning views of snow-capped peaks and lush meadows.
The ideal time to visit Kedarnath and Tungnath is from May to June and September to October. The temples open during Akshaya Tritiya (April–May) and close around Diwali (October–November). Monsoon months (July–August) are best avoided due to landslides and heavy rainfall. Weather remains cold even in summer, especially at night, so visitors should prepare accordingly.
Weather in Kedarnath and Tungnath is cold throughout the pilgrimage season. Day temperatures range between 10°C to 20°C, while nights can dip to near freezing. Carry warm clothing including thermals, woolen caps, gloves, and windproof jackets. Trekking shoes with good grip, a raincoat, sunscreen, personal medication, a flashlight, and energy snacks are essential for a comfortable and safe journey.
At Kedarnath, pilgrims can stay in GMVN guesthouses, budget hotels, dharamshalas, and tent accommodations. Gaurikund and Sonprayag also offer lodging facilities. Chopta, the base for Tungnath, has eco-lodges, guesthouses, and forest huts. During peak season, booking in advance is recommended. Vegetarian food such as dal, roti, rice, and seasonal vegetables is available. Non-vegetarian food and alcohol are strictly prohibited in these sacred areas.
While in Kedarnath, don’t miss the Bhairavnath Temple, located just a short trek away, believed to guard the region during winter. Vasuki Tal, a glacial lake surrounded by Himalayan peaks, offers a scenic 8 km trek. Near Tungnath, the Chandrashila Peak trek is a must-do. Just 1.5 km from Tungnath, this summit provides breathtaking 360-degree views of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, and other peaks. Deoria Tal, a pristine lake located near Ukhimath, is another serene spot perfect for nature lovers and photographers.
The Kedarnath and Tungnath Yatra is not just a spiritual journey but also a profound encounter with nature and inner peace. Both temples are surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks, spiritual legends, and scenic landscapes that leave a lasting impression. Whether you’re seeking blessings from Lord Shiva or looking for a peaceful retreat in the mountains, Kedarnath and Tungnath offer an unforgettable experience that touches the soul. This divine combination of faith, nature, and adventure makes the journey a must for every spiritual traveler.
